(This conversation occurs between "Getting Biblical" and "Multiplicity") Marleigh: Sometime after Thielo is up and about but before he's fully repaired his head (he's got hair and skin over it, but hasn't welded the new plate in), he finds Gwen some time when Lexa is occupied (actually sometime in the middle of the night is probably good, some night when Gavin isn't there). He asks Gwen if she would talk to him in private. Assuming she's willing, they go for a walk or something. "Gwen, I have a problem. I have a secret that I need to tell someone in case something happens to me, and I think you are the best choice. If I tell you, will you promise to keep my secret, and in particular, never to tell my wife?" Andy: "Well, gosh, I guess so, unless it's something that... but you wouldn't ask something bad for her so it must be okay..." Marleigh: "She used to know, but chose to forget, and I will respect her wishes." "I'm clockwork." Andy: Gwen looks suitably stunned. "Is this a joke? Because I'm usually good with jokes but I'm not perfect yet..." Marleigh: "It's not a joke. I really am a clockwork." It occurs to me that I shouldn't turn my back on her until I'm sure she's not going to freak, so it isn't the time to show her the hole in my head. Instead, I show her the phillips head screwdriver built into my left ring finger. "The original Thielo Strauss died several years ago. Lexa built me to be her new husband, then forgot that there was ever a change. She doesn't want to remember, so I take care to make sure she doesn't find out by accident." Andy: She doesn't seem like she's going to freak, she seems more concerned about not understanding humans right (i.e. missing some joke) than freaking. "That's sad. I mean, it's sad that he died. I mean, I like you so I guess it's good because otherwise you wouldn't be here but it's sad too, she must have been very sad." She thinks for a moment. "Does Gavin know?" Marleigh: "Yes, she was very upset. That is why she made me. "Gavin knows, yes. Esteban, Angelina, Dr. Staadtler, and Demian know as well. Some other Inquisition members may also know. It's in a classified part of my file, people who can be trusted and have a need to know are told. To be honest, I wish Esteban and Gavin didn't know. They aren't very subtle, and the more people who know, the more likely it is that Lexa will find out. "The reason I thought I should tell you is that if I am knocked unconscious, there isn't anyone who can repair me except Lexa, and she can't know. I was injured badly in the desert, and there was no one who knew much of anything about clockwork to help. You've been studying clockwork to learn more about yourself. If you're willing, I would like to teach you my schematics as well, just in case." Andy: "I can do that. I mean, I'm not very good, but I can give it a try." Marleigh: "I'm sure you'll do fine. If you're anything like me, you'll take to repairing clockwork fairly quickly." Over the next several months, Thielo works on teaching Gwen about clockwork repair. He won't hide the fact that he's doing this, he'll only hide the parts that pertain to him. If she's got photographic memory, he'll draw his schematics for her, have her memorize them, and then destroy them. He'll also show her the secret compartment where he keeps the extra skin and the directions on how to relight his pilot light. Andy: Gwen has a very good memory, though it doesn't seem to be photographic like yours is. Still, it's good enough that she can remember your schematics by taking notes in an extremely compressed shorthand that doesn't make any sense to you. Gwen doesn't ask more questions immediately but over the next few months there are a slow series of questions about what it's like, and how you feel, and how you learned to fit in, and so on. Marleigh: I'll answer her questions the best I can. I'll give her advice if I can think of any I think would help her. I'll tell her about the mistakes I made so she can learn from them. Only if we're in private, though. I still flatly refuse to admit I'm a clockwork in front of the others. Andy: She probably tries to talk to you about it at some point when others are around but Alexandra isn't, but she figures out how it works with only one such incident.
