10.26 Chemical Engineering Projects Lab Evaluation

The following is the verbatim review of the course from the "1993" Course Evaluation Guide.

Professor Comments:

All projects are different and therefore preparations are different. Each group prepares their project with either the faculty consultant or off-campus consultant. The students plan their own experimental program with help of consultants. The experiments provide independent approach but requires team work. The pace is quite hectic since a report is prepared every two weeks. The experiences gained by the students allow them to perform research with an independent spirit. The reports prepare the student for technical writing needed in their future careers.

This course consists of many projects, from which groups of students can choose to work during the term. Lecturer David Goldstein and Professor Herbert Sawin receive much praise for their explanations and assistance, with only a few drawbacks. Goldstein is difficult to understand sometimes, as one student points out. On the whole, both lecturers are knowledgeable and supportive. Professor Daniel Wang "knows everything," comments one student. Lecturer Jean-Francois Hamel is also found to be "supportive" towards his students and, and also very enthusiastic about the projects. However, Professor Robert Langer receives mixed responses from his students since some feel that he is friendly while others feel that he is not sensitive to the class. Overall, all of the instructors are both supportive and clear when explaining the details of the projects.

Some students find the TAs to be helpful although the TAs are sometimes absent from lab. However, a majority of the students feel that they are not useful. A few students comment that the TAs are only good about bringing food.

There is really no text for this course. There is only information relevant to each of the projects. Several students believe that the workload should be reduced. Some even express the idea of having the class last a full year in order to fully explore the projects.

On the whole, 10.6 is a "good way to learn about a research project, but the reports are too numerous. This stipulation makes the course too demanding, according to the students.

"Too much time demand. "

"Interesting way to get your feet in academic research. "

"Cood course."

"Overall a great class...prepares you for industry. "
