Laboratory Work

At the beginning of every experiment, a problem statement will be issued to each project team. The problem statement will contain the following information: general background, the overall project objectives and the specific problem area(s) for the group to investigate.

All experimental work should be performed during the normally scheduled course hours: Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday 1 to 5 PM (there are 2 separate sessions). During these hours there will be a TA available in the laboratory to answer questions. If a group cannot complete their experimental work during the scheduled laboratory hours they should consult with one of the staff members in charge of the course. With your team mates, you will plan the work, assemble the necessary equipment, carry out experiments and report the results. You are encouraged to work out your own experimental plan, to work up your experimental results as fast as they are obtained and to modify your plans as you proceed. You will learn how to set up your equipment with help from faculty. As part of your project, you'll learn experimental techniques, project and team management, data analysis and presentation, and technical communications.
