To run MATLAB 6 on Athena, at the system prompt first type
add mablab
Then, to run in batch mode, type
matlab -ver 6.1.0 &
Alternative, with the new GNOME interface, MATLAB may be launched from the toolbar by selecting Menu->Math/Plotting->MATLAB.
