11.188/11.520 Lab #8 Geospatial Services IN-CLASS NOTES Note: (1) The lab Assignment involves creating a map in Part III-B and choosing ONE of the Four options in Part IV (2) Today's lab is intended as an introduction to GIS data sources and geospatial Web Services on the Internet. This 'head start' will help you think about a feasible project to consider as the '4th' homework set at the end of semester. (3) An ArcMap document has been saved in M:\www\labs\lab8\11.188_web_service_examples.mxd with the connections already made to both ESRI ArcGIS Online services and to MassGIS WMS services. Copy this document to c:\temp along with several familiar shapefiles. Since it can be tricky to connect to the web services, this document will give you a head start on that portion of the lab. (4) Use presentation portion of lab explores several ways to access MassGIS web services: by adding a GIS Server and by using ArcCatalog to find layers within 'Massachusetts Data from MassGIS (GeoServer)' that can be dragged and dropped into the ArcMap table of contents. Start ArcMap using a local copy of 11.188_web_service_examples.mxd and then try adding a few more MassGIS layers to it as indicated in Part III-B.
