SPSS > Frequencies

1. To obtain information on the frequency distribution of your dataset go to Analyze->Descriptive Statistics and click "Frequencies."

2. Select two variables to analyze, "incws" and "educ_yr."

3. Click the "Statistics" button in the Frequencies window. Select additional statistics as shown below. Then click "Continue."

4. Click the "Charts" button in the Frequencies window. Check the "Histograms:" option and include "With normal curve." Click "Continue" and then OK.

5. The descriptive statistics are as follows:

  • mean, median, mode - Central Tendency
  • std. deviation, minimum and maximum, range - Spread
  • percentiles - 25%, 50% and 75% of the observations fall below this value
  • std. error of mean - a statistic for measuring the spread of a population mean

6. A histogram of incws.

7. A histogram of educ_yr.
