WEST NEWTON VILLAGE AREA PLAN
Newton, Massachusetts

The plan was developed by graduate students in the Community Growth and Land Use Planning course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The City of Newton’s Department of Planning and Development engaged the MIT class to envision future redevelopment in West Newton Village and a portion of the Washington Street corridor and recommend implementation strategies to make the plan a reality. This project is an outgrowth of the 2007 Newton Comprehensive Plan and builds on the 2001 plan developed by students in the Community Growth and Land Use Planning course. These plans identified West Newton Village as an area of strong commercial activity that is limited by a lack of a vision for the future, limited parking, and the abrupt transition from residential neighborhoods to the commercial corridor along Washington Street.
