In-Lab Notes - Nov. 29, 2010
This week's schedule:
-
Today, Nov. 29 in 37-312 -
- Feedback from test
- Expanded solutions (with sample maps) are posted online: http://mit.edu/11.520/www/test
- Common errors:
- Joining via FID instead of 'join by location'
- Running out of time
- See solutions for other issues, variations, accepted answers
- All graded tests have been uploaded to Stellar
- Statistics: mean ~ 86 with a standard deviation ~ 10
- Our assessment:
- the class did well - we did not expect 100%
- above average is A level work
- within about one standard deviation below average is B level work
- the test is only part of the semester grade (23%) whereas the project is 18%, homework 30, and labs 25
- Project work
- Lab tips:
- Set your 'scratch workspace' to c:\usertemp\arcscratch for
improved performance in 37-312 (and on cron machines)
- Move large shapefiles to c:\usertemp\myproject for computation
intensive tasks (and then back when done)
- Title and Abstract
- Update current draft by end of day on the Google doc from Shan's email
- You can continue to revise this during the week
- Do you have all the data you need?
- That is, have you revised project to need only the data you have?
- Do you need to use the GIS lab for
- time series census data (from the GeoLytics CD)
- ESRI's US streetmap for address matching?
- Rest of this week
- We are trying to reserve 37-312 for Wed., Dec. 1 from 2-4+ (we will let you know via email)
- If we cannot reserve 37-312, we will meet in 14E-310 for one-on-one project discussion with limited computers (you can work on your own in GIS lab, CRON, etc. if that is your best use of time)
- Remember office hours this week and usual Friday+Sunday lab times
- Monday, Dec. 12: Project presentations in CRN classroom (9-554)
Next week's schedule: Project Presentations
We will update the class project page with Monday and Wednesday times and locations for presentations. We will likely have 4 minutes each plus 1 minute for questions and 1 minute transition. We will be in the lecture room (14E-310) from 1:45 to 3:30 on Monday and in 9-451 from 1 to 5 on Wednesday. We will need volunteers to go on the first day (Monday, Dec. 6) and outside the 2-3:30 Wed. time slot in order to fit everyone in during the times that we can reserve needed rooms. The TAs will email further details including an online signup sheet.
