Think of a topic of interest to you (it could be the same as a previous year topic)
Think about a subtopic involving some spatial analysis for which you might have data or find data online
Sketch your short proposal and/or talk to us
The project proposal is due Wednesday, Nov. 18
Model Builder Example:
Lulu has prepared notes to explain the construction of a model builder 'model'
to select the block groups within the 5 cities in and around Cambridge. A
PDF version of these notes is here: http://mit.edu/11.520/www/labs/lab9/Modelbuilder_example.pdf
MassGIS Webservices (Lab #8 info):
The MassGIS webserver has been down or too slow a good bit of the time lately
(http://giswebservices.massgis.state.ma.us/geoserver/wms?)
If you are having a hard time accessing their services, indicate this
in your exercise writeup and include the error message that you encountered
- and move on to other parts of the exercise. One of the problems with
online geoservers is that they are not always available! In Lab #8, we
want you to get a flavor for what is available - but not to spend a lot
of time on any one site that may be down from time to time.
If you want to see a bit more about what is happening, you will need
to save and then read the plain-text, xml-tagged file that is returned
by the server (as part of the handshaking between your machine and the
server). For example, if you use the same URL but add 'REQUEST=GetCapabilities'
to the end, the server will return an xml-tagged, plain-text list of all
the layers that it supports. Try it: http://giswebservices.massgis.state.ma.us/geoserver/wms?REQUEST=GetCapabilities
(you may need to save this returned data as a text file before you can
read it).
