Locale: The Edmond Vent System

What is the Edmond Vent System?

The Edmond ventfield is where the Atlantis II project and habitat will be located. It is in the Indian Ocean and the closest land is on the island Rodriguez, which is part of the Republic Mauritius. Rodriguez is a 119 square kilometer island. It is surrounded by coral reef and has one port. It is about 430 km from the Edmond vent system. See coordinates and distance derivation.

Researchers on the R/V Knorr of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) discovered the vent in the spring of 2001. It is named after the late John Edmond. Edmond taught at MIT as a geochemistry professor and had been a member of the research team in the late 1970's that discovered hydrothermal vents. Learn more about John Edmond.

Since Edmond's research team first discovered hydrothermal vents in the late seventies, many vent fields have been discovered. Look at the picture to get an idea where The Edmond Ventfield is situated.
