Introducing EVE...Although our mission relies heavily on robotic vehicles for scientific observation and collection of facts, this does not eliminate the need for manned remote operations. Technological advances have made robotic vehicles 'smart' in many ways, but still there are certain tasks which are better left for humans. Thus the need arose for making a manned submersible. It has been named EVE (Edmond Vent Explorer) and it uses state of the art technology to help it achieve its purposes as efficiently and easily as possible. EVE is designed to accommodate three people. One of these three should obviously be a pilot, and he should also have some engineering knowledge to help him repair EVE if anything goes wrong. The other two people will be scientists. One of them should be a biologist with some medical background, so that he can at least use a first aid kit that will be on board, and he can thus act as a doctor if the need arises. The second should be a geologist. Both scientists should be taught how to control the manipulators and the ROV attached to EVE, as well as to operate the life support equipment. During any single operation, one of the scientists will do the observation, while the other will take care of the manipulators or the ROV if they are needed. |
