“A” Criteria…

The Ecology of Migratory Species Found at ANWR

Given Responsibility: To understand the behaviors and requirements of non-migratory species, with a special emphasis on rare and endangered species…

“A” Criteria:
In order to succeed as a team, we feel it necessary to fulfill a set of goals that is structured and sequentially ordered within a feasible time-frame. We believe that in order to earn an “A,” it is not only necessary to cooperate well within our team, but to also communicate often with other teams, ensuring coherence and objectivity. It is furthermore understood that work must be equally distributed amongst team members and that goals should be met as close as possible to the time planned.
As far as research is concerned, we will be expected to understand the different types of non-migratory species that live in ANWR. We will report on their habitats, niches, and influence on the environment as well as their relationships with each other, with migratory species (Team 6), and with other abiotic factors of the environment. In addition, the current and potential impact of humans in the ANWR area on non-migratory species must be considered and researched enough to connect our area of study with that of Team 4’s. Of course, we will also need to supply Team 5 with critical pieces of information depending on what they need, hence the necessary communication between teams…
Quantitatively, we expect to individually work about 6 hours out of the classroom each week.

Outline of Primary Goals for Team 7, ordered sequentially:
·    Create a general food web of the major non-migratory species groups that live in ANWR.
·    Order species into Energy/Nutrient groups, i.e. Producers, Primary Consumers, Secondary Consumers, Tertiary Consumers, Detritvores…
·    Confirm a list of what characterization details must be satisfied in research—
o    List of species within group—focus on rare and endangered species (most likely to be affected by changes to the environment)
o    Habitat description
o    What’s needed to Survive: lifestyle, form of shelter, food, niche
o    Population dynamics
·    Make a basic outline for the Team Website
·    Assign different areas of design, content, layout, etc…to group membersà at group meetings on Wednesdays make sure that everyone’s work on their various areas of the website corresponds to and flows with the work of everyone else—always work on maximum user efficiency, clear content, and simple aesthetics…
·    Research Eco-indicators such as amphibians and insects…how are they doing now? In the past? Outlook for the future—with drilling, without drilling?
·    Research on Past drilling in Alaska to help predict effects on non-migratory species if drilling occurs in ANWR.
·    Research on Human Impact
