Las Tortugas – Team 1 – Coordination Meeting 10/27/04
  • Discussion of team web site and interests for the final team plan pages
    • Finalized groups will be formed during Friday's team meeting
  • Anna's talk on her D.C. trip this past Monday. 
    • met with Ecuadorian Commercial/Agricultural individual, director of Charles Darwin Foundation, director of World Wildlife Foundation, and others
    • There are some unpublished data and plans that have not been released to the public, including an energy diapgram for the Galapagos.
    • Garrett will meet with Anna on Sunday evening to discuss questions to ask people on her five-day trip to Ecuador starting November 3. 

Las Tortugas – Team 1 – Coordination Meeting 10/20/04
  • Monitoring research presented in team
    • Garrett created bird and fish tables, volcanic sensors
    • Individual research should be posted on the team site and individual sites
  • Galapagos Monitoring Project, Jan. 1999 to June 2002
  • Unanswered question:  What were the results and conclusions of this project?  It seems that the information is confined to a small group of individuals who are reluctant to release it.  Also, what current sensor systems are in place on the islands?   Back to Top

Las Tortugas – Team 1 – Coordination Meeting 10/13/04
  • Biopreserve/task 1 research-centered week
  • Marty is looking at the Antarctic Treaty / Greenland and spoke about that
    • research on his personal page
  • Illegal fishing is a significany problem around our islands
    • Japanese
    • sea cucumbers are very profitable
    • fisherman that used to make a few hundred dollars per month can now make that in less than a day
  • International feasibility must be investigated further
    • It has potential, but must be approahced in a careful manner.
  • Nature Reserves: Special Places for People and Nature explains the nature reserve concept and how it was developed in the late 1960s
    • the first nature reserve was founded in the mid-1970s
    • the Galapagos became one in the mid-1980s
    • There are currently four hundred reserves throughout the world.

  • Team Presentations
    • Approximately 3 minutes per team
    • Plan concise presentation for next time (in about two weeks)
  • More Marine Research Focus
    • Suggested by Garrett in response to I-Max film
    • Bryan mentioned friend in Ocean Engineering department
    • Mr. Gurnitz lent us Monitoring Plant and Animal Populations
    • Matthew offered to find ocean topographical map
  • General Suggestions
    • More focus on background – entire plan will come together after 10/30
    • Avoid hesitancey to contact experts in various fields
    • Don't limit yourself – follow anything that seems interesting
  • Next Meeting
    • Set goals for next week (no class Monday)

  • Start putting research on the site
  • Update minutes once they are available on the internet
  • Make sure that we follow our team definition of an A for the web site - that it should be easy to follow and user friendly, among other qualities

  • Investigate cloning laws in Ecuador (if any exist)
