How does Commercial Fishing threaten the ecosystem?

Types of Fishing:

Commercial	Subsistence
profit	food for themselves
large-scale	small-scale
easier to regulate	harder to regulate
restricted fishing area	allowed in marine reserve area
more recent immigrants	older, permanent residents

How does it affect the:

Islanders	Mainlanders
some getting money from commercialization	increases their job opportunities
depletes fishing in the future	immigration problem/ enforced?

Solutions:

stop fishing down the foodchain
- immediate action required
- as well as long-term strategy
educate the (local) masses
- scholarships to learn how to help the environment
- require class for fishing license
fishing quota (per boat)
- mostly successful in Maine
- per everyone does not work
- also makes it harder to get into the business
must also control the middle man
- international pressures
- govt needs to get into the business (take place of distributors?)
price fixing/min price
co-ops
- can set price
- not run by company -> reasonable price
involve research in decision making
aquaculture the seacucumbers
- creates sizeable planting crops
- makes jobs and supplies seacucumbers
- grow the seacucumbers elsewhere
create jobs (ie. not fishing)
- thru tourism (?) and parks
enforce the laws (more police than can do more)
make it not lucrative for illigal fishermen

keep away commercial fishing and hurt residents?
