A group of fishermen displayed violent actions in an effort to express
their discontent with environmental restrictions in the waters around the
Galapagos Islands. The group stole some baby tortoises from a tortoise
breeding center. The tortoises were later returned but the threat
to the wildlife and the discontent of the fishermen poses a huge problem.
The number of fishermen coming to the islands doubled over the last
year even though there has been an official ban on new fishing boats. On
top of disobeying the rules, the fishermen also persuaded the local authorities
to extend the lobster season. This is a very serious problem and measures
need to be taken to enforce the rules so that the Galapagos wildlife can
be protected.
