Based on the United Nations actions to rebuild from the destruction caused this past year, this reference gives a comprehensive assessment of actions taken on both a national and international level after the recent tsunami in 2004.  Topics covered include the environmental conditions, policies enacted, and steps taken to recover from the damage, both, long and short-term.

This article covers a tsunami aleet issued by the National Weather Service, which turned out to be a false alarm.  Other than stating this, however, it delineates the way the information was spread to officials and the public.  It gives a brief look at what people in the area were actually ready to do had it been an actual tsunami.

This puiblished work gives an overview of tsunamis as hazards, what causes them, what tsunamis cause, and what modern risk they pose.  while this book does not directly address what can be done to recover from tsunamis, it provides a comprehensive overview of numerous aspects of tsunamis that should definitely not be overlooked.

This ProQuest article gives a brief view of the current aid situation in response to Hurricane Katrina.  While this does not actually deal with tsunamis, it gives a brief look at the kind of actions that are currently taken in rebuilding disaster-stricken communities.

This reference presents many facets of the tsunami recovery.  Regarding the areas of structural revitalization, this work covers water systems recovery, general building rebuilding, highway systems, and communication recovery.

This article deals mainly with gender issues regarding rations that have arisen in Banda Aceh since the 2004 tsunami.  It brings to light a side of the issue that is not immediately obvious.  In addition, the article deals with the idea that emergency relief efforts might end up turning into long-term relief efforts, and allows for a look into what can be done to prevent that from happening.

This work is a collaboration by the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Oceanography and the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics.  It covers the history of tsunamis in the Mediterranean, mainly, the extent of the damage done in numerous locations and what caused the tsunamis.

 

Gross, M. G.  (1972).  Oceanography:  A View of the Earth.  Englewood Cliffs, NJ:  Prentice-Hall.

 

This textbook provides an overview of all the major facets of oceanography.  While it is not a main source for information on tsunamis and tsunami damage reconstruction, it is a good reference for general oceanographic information.

 

Kusky, T. M.  (2003).  Geological Hazards:  A Sourcebook.  Westport, CT: Greenwood Press.

 

This work is an overview of various natural disasters and what effects they have.  While this work covers only generally the topic of tsunamis, it gives a succinct look at the most important things to keep in mind when looking at the problem.

This article takes an in-depth look at the aftermath of tsunamis and long-term efforts to rebuild.  Although the focus is mainly on the environment, the article does focus on aspects that pertain to the structural reconstruction that effects the environment adversely.

This article covers a dimension of the natural disaster that is often overlooked.  In rebuilding a community, it is just as important to rebuild it psychologically as it is to rebuild structurally.  This article stresses the need for massive psychological treatment that may sometimes go unnoticed.

 

O'Loughlin, K. F.  (2003).  Carribean Tsunamis: A 500-Year History from 1498-1998.  Boston, MA:  Kluwer Academic Publishers.

 

This work covers the tsunami effect on the Carribean in depth, looking at the hazards that have arisen, the actions taken to stop them, and the experience of rebuilding afterwards.

 

Proceedings of the 2nd Japan-United States Workshop on Urban Earthquake Hazards Reduction.  (1988).  Shizmu Japan, Tokai University.

 

In 1988, A conference was held in Japan for the U.S. and Japan to discuss the problem of tsunamis.  this bok is the manuscript of what went on at that conference.  According to the Foreword, the conference "provided a forum  for the exchange of information on earthquake problems at the urban level, focussing on ongoing mitigation efforts mostly in Japan and the USA."  Most relevant in this text are the discussions on earthquake disaster policy, hazards following earthquakes, and long-term recovery.

 

Report of the Los Angeles County Earthquake Commission: San Fernando Earthquake, February 9, 1971.  (1971).  Long Beach, CA:  Los Angeles County Commission.

 

While this book does not deal directlywith tsunamis, many of the problems faced from this disaster are similar to those possible after a tsunami.  Most helpful in this work isa  section entitled, "Effects of the Earthquake on the Works of Man."  This section discusses the structural damage from earthquakes, which includes damage estimates, damage patterns, public transportation problems, and the state of several necessary facilities after the earthquake.

 

Richards, F. A.  (1981).  Coastal Upwelling.  Washington, DC:  American Geophysical Union.

 

This book takes an in-depth look at the causes of tsunamis as well as the current methods of tracking and studying them.  While this work is very old, the references to several past tsunamis are still very relevant.

 

Schiermeier, Q.  (2005).  Tsunami Research: On the Trail of Destruction.  Nature -London, 7024, 350-353.

 

This article from the journal, Nature, covers recent research regarding tsunamis.  This article focusses on the damage that is caused by tsunamis and how people are dealing with the damage.  

 

Solutions to Coastal Disasters Conference.  (2002).  Solutions to Coastal Disasters '02: Conference Proceedings February 24-27, 2002.  Reston, VA: American Society of Civil Engineers.

 

This manuscript covers numerous topics discussed in this 2002 conference in San Diego.  Some of the general topics discussed include tsunami risk in general, relief effort goals (for various coastal disasters), and risk assessment factors.

 

Tsunamis Affecting Alaska: 1937-1996.  (1996).  Boulder, CO:  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

 

This work gives a basic idea of tsunami causes and hazards in general, then shifts focus to the occurences that have taken place in Alaska.  It gives a history of the past events, what their effect has been, and some of the actions taken as a result of the disasters.

 

A Survey Report for Building Damages Due to the 1995 Hygo-Jen Nanbu Earthquake.  (1996).  Japan:  Building Research Institute, Ministry of Reconstruction.

 

This book is a report of the structural damage that resulted from this earthquake.  It also includes an overview of the actions taken immediately after the earthquake and a summary of the site investigation.

This news transcript covers the story of how people are recovering from the recent tsunami last year.  It covers the amount of money raised in relief funds, the way that money is being spent, and how peole are coping with their losses.
