1. How the Mississippi River Grew

This article tells us a brief history of the formation and transformation of Mississippi River. Mississippi River stars from west slope of Appalachians and Rocky Mountains and gathers rainfall of a third of the country. It may have an origin of 500 million years old. When north and south America drifted apart 200 million years ago, the river begun. Before the ice age, it is a smaller river drained only the southern part. The great glacier blocked the drainage to the east and north, So the water and sediments from far north add to Mississippi River

2. Statistics about the flood in 1993

There was a false prediction from the National Weather services in mid-March. Then in late June, an 8" rainstorm started. Following that, there was continuing dam bursts and bridges in different areas are closed. In late August, one of the tributaries of Mississippi River flooded again. This flood, affecting 9 states, has left great social impact.

3. The Evolution of the Yellow River Control System in Late Imperial China
Controlling the Dragon

This article tells about what are the reasons that make Yellow River dangerous. The Yellow River passes through treeless loess plateau with lots of slits due to the 900 meters falling. But in the downstream of the river, the water slows so that the loess soils settle out. It causes the basement of the river to rise.
The controlling of the river dates back to the earlies history of China. It is complicated due to various reasons, from climtate to the different courses of the river.

4. The Proper Measures for Flood Management and Water Resources Exploitation on the Yellow River
Taming the Yellow River: Slit and Floods

The biggest floods in Yellow River typically occurs in hot summer or autum. These floods can be divided into upper-reach floods and mid-reach floods.
The upper-reach floods are maily formed by successive periods of rainfall of long duration. At present, Longyangxia and Liujiaxia reservoiurs are responsible for flood protection.
The mid-reach floods of the Yellow River may have different patterns. But the strongest ones are often caused by storm rainfalls. Now they are controlled by four different reservoird at four points.
Downstream of the river, there are still a large amount of drainage area where the floods cannot be controlled.
