Q:Where are some of the important features of the IPAQ are located?

A:This diagram has the key features labeled.

Q: How do I check the remaining battery level?

A: There are two ways:

   1. Click Start | Settings | System | Power [movie]
   2. Press Task Manager (iTask) button, click settings icon, click Power

Q: How do I check/adjust backlight settings?

A:
Click Start | Settings | System |Backlight |Brightness [movie]

Q: What happens if the battery level drops to zero?

A:Any loss of power will result in the loss of everything in RAM.

Q:How do I browse the folders, and create a new folder?

A:You need to use the file explorer program.

Click Start | Programs | File Explorer

Underneath the software title (File Explorer) the name of the folder you are currently in is displayed with a triangle pointing downwards right next to it. By clicking this triangle, you can go to the desired folders and list the files and folders inside them.

Here are the steps you need to follow, in order to create a class folder called 12-114-1 inside the storage card, as an exercise:
    1. Browse to the Storage card folder.
    2. Hold your stylus down on the screen, until window which gives you the option to create a new folder shows up.
    3. Select create a new folder.
    4. Type the name of the folder (12-114-1)

Q: How do I copy and past files?

A:Once you locate the folder or the files you want to copy, you need to the following:

    1. Select them with the stylus and hold it on the screen for a few seconds.
    2. Select copy.
    3. Browse to the destination folder.
    4. Hold the stylus down, and select paste.

Q: How do I create and save a word document into this folder?

A: Here is a list of what you need to do:

    1. Click Start | Programs | Pocket Word | New
    2. Type your text.
    3. Once finished, click on 'Tools | Save Document As
    4. Type in the file name, Select 12-114-1 from the Folder pulldown menu, and also Storage card from the Location menu.

Q: How do I get rid of the sounds?

A:Click Start | Settings | Sounds & Notifications and uncheck all the boxes.

 

 

INTRODUCTION TO ARCPAD

Q: How do I add a basemap to view?
A: It is very easy:
  1. Click the button with a big 'plus' sign which is the third button on the top row.
  2. Click on the plus signs located to the left of the following file names in order: Storage card and 12-114-1. And put a check mark next to the file named 'sd_aerial30.sid'
  3. Click 'OK' and close the window.

Q: How can I start drawing lines, polygons and putting points on this map?

A: As you all know, you can input 3 types of vector data in ArcPAD: a point, a line nad/or a polygon. The following three questions and answers will be dealing with them one at a time. The polygon layer exercise, will show you how to add a polygon layer and draw the outlines of the marina using the aerial photograph of San Diago. Next we will pick a house and label it with a point feature and associate an address to it: 12 Granite St. Apt.#12. And finally, we will create a line layer and connect the house with the marina.

Q: How do I create a Polygon layer?
A: This is also very easy, even though it has quite a number of steps to follow:
  1. Click on the triangle to the right of the folder icon, and select 'New Layer...' from the list.
  2. Select "polygon" from the 'Type" pull-down menu. and click on the plus sign at the bottom of the screen.
  3. For the purposes of this exercise, type in 'target" as the field name, keep the text radio button on, and change the lenght (the number of character you can type in for this field) from 10 to 40.
  4. Click on the 'OK' button twice to close the two windows.
  5. At the 'Save As' window, type "Target" as your file name, and save the file inside the 12-114-1 folder you have created earlier.
  6. Click on 'OK' to complete the mission.
  7. The polygon drawing tool is no longer grayed out, and you can start drawing polygons on your screen.

Q: How do I create a Point layer?

A: The steps are identical to the ones listed above. Just remember to select 'point' from the Type pull'down menu and name the fields appropriatly.

Q: How do I create a Line layer?

A: The steps are identical to the ones listed above. Just remember to select 'polyline' from the Type pull'down menu and name the fields appropriatly.

Q: How do I save my work??

A: Here is what you need to do:

  1. Click on the triangle to the right of the folder icon, and select 'Save Map As...' from the list.
  2. Type "Ex1" as your file name, and save the file inside the 12-114-1 folder you have created earlier.
