Reading list

Papers are available in the structure lab, on the 10th floor of the Green building. Look in the top compartment of the gray file holder in the back right corner of the room (next to the lockers). Please be extremely careful with original geologic maps; many can no longer be replaced. Books are available in the course reserve section of the Lindgren Library on the 2nd floor of the Green building.

PDF files of many papers on the reading list are available here. These files are restricted to MIT students registered in course 12.481. MIT personal certificates are required.

Learning ArcPad

This fall and winter we will use the ESRI product ArcPad running on Compaq iPAQ handheld computers to collect geologic field data.  Since much of the software used for this purpose is customized here in the department, a set of tutorials on the software will be presented early in the fall semester.  The tutorials are available at the above link.

ESRI Virtual Campus

This fall, we will begin integrating ArcGIS into the field camp curriculum, and into the map editing and compilation process.  The class will use ArcGIS 8.2, which is available exclusively for Windows-based computers.  Since this software is quite new, the introduction to the software will take place through a series of web-based tutorials available through ESRI.  The ESRI Virtual Campus can be accessed from the above link.  Pass codes for the courses were distributed during class on 9/23.  If you didn’t get a pass code, or lost your copy of the codes, please contact Nathan.  Computers with ArcGIS are located in the 8th floor computer lab and in the 10th floor lab.
