Laboratory #1

Laboratory #1: Tensile testing of metals
Date performed: Wed Sept 11
Date due: Wed Sept 25

Objectives:
     -engineering vs. true stress-strain representations
-yield strength, 0.2% proof stress, ultimate tensile strength (UTS)
     -Young's modulus, tangent modulus
     -elastic vs. plastic Poisson's ratio
-stress-strain curve beyond necking: Bridgman correction
     -Ramberg-Osgood Stress-Strain Law
-fracture strain, strain energy to fracture
     -brittle vs. ductile behavior
Requirements:
     (1) active participation during laboratory demonstration
     (2) no more than one and a half page report (including figures)
     -describe test set-up
-describe the four different metal alloys tested
-how and with what were stresses measured
-how and with what were strains measured
-what was the loading rate, etc.
-describe sources of error and quantify those errors if possible
     -describe any calibration
     (3) report should be typed with 12pt Times New Roman font with single
spacing, it should be elegant and scientific (example style is attached)
     (4) answer all questions on attached laboratory assignment
