scholarships & fellowship information

There are many ways for Ocean Engineering students to receive funding for research, and recognition for work well done. Here are a few scholarships and fellowships available to those studying and doing research in ocean engineering, science, and policy. American Society of Naval Engineers Graduate Scholarships
ASNE sponsors a scholarship program which supports the study of naval architecture, marine, mechanical, civil, aeronautical, ocean, electrical and electronic engineering, and the physical sciences. Naval engineering encompasses the design, construction and repair of ships and their installed systems and equipment, as well as research, logistics support, and the management of acquisition and maintenance.
Application deadline: 15 February

International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers Undergraduate Student Scholarship
This scholarship award will be based purely upon merit and is open to all university level students studying offshore, ocean or polar engineering and/or their allied technical fields.

Marine Technology Society
The Society offers annual scholarships for MTS students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in a marine related field. Prizes range from $1,000 to $10,000. There is also a scholarship to support student travel to the OCEANS conference.
Application deadline: 15 April

Robert Bruce Wallace Prize
Undergraduate in the Department of Ocean Engineering at MIT are eligible.
Application deadline: Candidates are nominated and notified by the Ocean Engineering Department.

Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Undergraduate Award
Students entering their junior or senior year who are studying toward a degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering or marine industy related fields at one of 12 SNAME schools. Membership in the Society at the time of the award.
Application deadline: 1 May

Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Undergraduate Paper Awards
Undergraduate and graduate students alike are invited to present papers on a variety of marine engineering topics. Topics include, but are not limited to: Design, Acoustics, Hydrodynamics, Marine Robotics, Structures, Maritime Law, and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
Abstract deadline: 15 December

Department of Defense Graduate Fellowship
The Department of Defense is committed to increasing the number and quality of our Nation's scientists and engineers. Toward that end, the DoD annually supports approximately 8,000 graduate students in fields important to national defense needs.
Application deadline: 16 January

Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship
College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply.
Application Deadline: 2 November

ISOPE Offshore Mechanics Scholarship for Outstanding Students
A recipient must be a graduate student, or be admitted to a graduate program and will be a graduate student in the field of Offshore Mechanics, as verified by the Department Chairman or the supervising professor. High scholastic achievement must have been demonstrated. He/she must be a person of integrity, good character and strict morals. Preferences may be given to those whose papers are accepted at the council-supported technical meetings.

John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship
Established in 1979 to provide a unique educational experience to students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. The program, which is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Sea Grant College Program, matches highly qualified graduate students with "hosts" in the legislative branch, executive branch, or appropriate associations/ institutions located in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one year paid fellowship.
Application deadline: 1 May

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Award
Objective of this award are: to foster advanced level study in simulation and training research; to enhance and expand the theoretical and practical knowledge of how to train the operators and users of complex systems and how to simulate the real-world environments in which they function; and to disseminate the results of that research through lectures, seminars, and publications.

Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding scholarship and encourages independent graduate level research -- particularly by female and minority students -- in oceanography, marine biology and maritime archaeology.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
A competition is conducted for Graduate Research Fellowships, with additional awards offered for women in engineering and computer and information science. NSF Graduate Fellowships offer recognition and three years of support for advanced study to approximately 900 outstanding graduate students in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences, including the history of science and the philosophy of science, and to research-based PhD degrees in science education.
Application deadline: 7 November

Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Graduate Award
Eligibility: Awards are made for one year of study leading to a Master's Degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering or in fields directly related to the marine industry.
Application deadline: February 1
