Text: Thermal Structures for Aerospace Applications, Earl Thornton, is required
Theory of Thermal Stresses, Boley and Weiner, is suggested
 Grading: Problem sets 50%
Quizzes 50%

Late problem sets will be docked 25% before the solutions are discussed; they will be corrected but not graded afterwards. Problems sets and Quizzes can be delayed or rescheduled for good reasons by prior arrangement.
Academic honesty: Any materials you can find in libraries, notes from other classes, etc. are OK to use to help solve problem sets, and collaboration with other students is permitted, but both must be referenced. Quizzes will be open book, open note; the same policy on outside material applies. A policy on study groups taken from 16.20 is attached; it applies to this course with the following exception- take home quizzes are to be done without collaboration of any kind, including discussion of the problem.
Computer use: Canned software is available to solve many problems, and will be introduced at various points in the course. Unless otherwise indicated, no credit will be given for merely exercising this software. Use of general-purpose programs (e.g. spreadsheets) is permitted; a clear, written description of the algorithm used must be included in problem set answers along with the answers.

There are no recitations and no TA for this class.

Nesbitt Hagood (37-327, x3-2738, nwhagood@mit.edu) is the official back-up professor for this course; he can answer questions, make emergency arrangements, etc., in Prof. McManus' absence.
