NASA MIR PROGRAM Mir 24 / NASA 5 Status Date: Wednesday, August 27, 1997 Mission Day: Mir 24 / NASA 5 MD 22/104 Mir 24 CDR Anatoly Solovyov Mir 24 FE Pavel Vinogradov NASA 5 FE Mike Foale Mir STATION SYSTEM/SUBSYSTEM ACTIVITIES NOTE: AT APPROXIMATELY 2013 DMT A DOWNLINK OF THE SPEKTR INTERNAL VIDEO WAS INITIATED. THIS WAS NOT THE VIDEO SCHEDULED TO BE DOWNLINKED. WHILE THE CREW INDICATED THAT THE VIDEO QUALITY ONBOARD WAS HIGH, THE DOWNLINK RECEIVED WAS EXCEPTIONALLY POOR. 40-50A have been routed from Spektr to Kvant-2, and 90 A have been routed to Krystall. Ventilation and thermal control are active in Krystall. Crew work continues on Krystall and Kvant-2. Priroda is not expected to be powered until after the September 3ish EVA. On Monday, the crew was unable to start an oxygen generating canister because the striker mechanism (on the filter/striker assembly) was too worn out to ignite the primer. Flight controllers contacted Mir-23 commander Tsibliev to locate the three spare assemblies on board, and the unit was changed out late Monday night. Since then, the crew has used three canisters per day. There were also a number of problems restarting the Kvant-1 Elektron following the I/EVA. On Monday at approximately 2040 DMT, it was restarted, although it was again shut down with purging Tuesday afternoon due to suspected thermal problems. After several attempts, Elektron has been successfully reactivated (approx. DMT 1430 today) following the disconnection of temperature sensors on the electroyzer within the fluid unit. The temperature of the fluid unit remained stable at 24°C throughout the day. TsUP indicated that if the temperature did not rise significantly, the crew should leave Elektron activated overnight and check the temperature again first thing in the morning. The condensate reclamation system (SRV-K) is on but crew reported no water flow into the system earlier this week. In between other activities, specialists at TsUP are working this problem. Mir PAYLOAD ACTIVITIES Greenhouse Daily Operations Interactions Private Medical Conference DATA MANAGEMENT On-Board - Nominal Network Status - Nominal Ground Facilities Status - Nominal OPERATIONS Procedures/Timelines The timeline for Thursday was received, translated, and forwarded to the POSA. Experiment Operations Greenhouse - Mike was told that Greenhouse operations do not carry over into NASA-6, and that all plant materials would be returned on STS-86. He was also given information on plans for plant fixation, which is tentatively planned for one week after the EVA. Mike reported that half of the plants had siliques. The plants with siliques were 10cm in size, and those without siliques were 6cm in size. He reported that in the past 2 to 3 plants were placed in each bag for fixation. Interactions was also completed today. Experiment Hardware MIPS laptop - One of the retrieved items was his personal laptop. This is the laptop that had a COSS hard drive installed along with a PCMCIA card. He mentioned that the laptop LCD screen was blank upon power up, and that it was at ambient temperature when he tried powering it up. As soon as the TsUP became aware of the safety board's concern over the battery, Mike was informed (today) to not attempt to power the laptop. He also stated that he believes he now has all the hard drives that he brought with him. Vacuum Cleaner - The vacuum cleaner has been tested by the crew and is fully operational. Priroda Hardware Checkout- Draft radiograms with TsUP comments for the repowering of hardware were faxed to the POSA. It is recommended that when possible, hardware checkout be performed during the same session as restart of experiment operations. We will perform PUP checkouts as soon as practical and only after it is certain that the Priroda is relatively free of condensation in the area behind the PUP units. It is unclear as to when power to the Priroda will be available for hardware checkout / operation but it will not occur prior to the EVA. The current priority of hardware checkout is as follows: PUPs, MIPS laptop/controller/ODD, MGBX, SAMS, CGEL hardware, MiSDE, OPM. Optical Properties Monitor - It is generally agreed that the OPM should be restarted as soon as possible, however, since the PI's have requested the use of contingency procedures, TsUP is requiring that the procedures undergo Procedure Verification since they are not in the onboard FDF. This is currently scheduled to occur Friday September 5th during the upcoming training sessions in Houston. A Procedures Change Request is required to be submitted as part of this process. We are still waiting for official SMART board recommendations/approval. Thermo-electric Freezer - The TsUP has received the RR for the inspection of the TEF unit. It is currently under review. Stowage/Transfer Mike identified the following items as retrieved from Spektr during the IVA: F2 camera for Greenhouse and mounting bracket 35mm lens for NASA camera 1 MIPS laptop w/red (0326) power cable Personal COSS HD & PCMCIA cards Old Optical disk kit (nomex) w/ 10-15 unlabelled disks (presume unused?) Spare MIPS hard drive Vacuum cleaner WITHOUT spare parts or bags Notebook containing Mike's real-time inventory lists Personal photos Mike reported that the Greenhouse leaf bags were NOT retrieved. SMP/Medical Mike began pre-EVA Russian medical exams. Today he is scheduled to complete MK-6 Body Mass Measurement, MK-7 Leg Circumference, and MK-8 Hand-operating a Bicycle Ergometer. MK-1 ECG is timelined for tomorrow. A Private Medical Conference (PMC) was conducted from 2003 to 2013 DMT via Altair. No mission impact. Mike asked to delay the video conference with his family until after the EVA. Environmental Parameters (Previous 24 hour period) Parameter Min. Max.
