NASA MIR PROGRAM

Mir 23 / NASA 5 Status

Date: Thursday, June 26, 1997

Mission Day: Mir 23 / NASA 5 MD 137/42

Mir 23 CDR Vasili Tsibliev

Mir 23 FE Alexander Lazutkin

NASA 5 FE Mike Foale

This morning the Russians initiated meetings concerning yesterday's incident and the recovery of Mir systems. Please address all questions to the Phase One Program Office.

CREW STATUS

Mike Foale remains in good health. He reports that he was in the Core Module at the time of the collision. He is currently sleeping in the transfer module.

Environmental parameters remain within normal limits.

We've talked to Mike twice today and received a list of items he's requested to be delivered on the next Progress. We'll keep Mike informed of all repair plans as they develop.

A prioritized list of candidate items for launch on Progress 235 is being prepared based on Mike's calldowns and science inputs.

SCIENCE STATUS

Completely lost in Spektr

- Sleep Hardware

- GASMAP

UNKNOWN LOSS

- FB Radiation experiment hardware retrieval during upcoming EVA

- TLD dosimeter measurement in Core Module two hours after EVA

- MIPS (data storage capability and downlink capability)

- OPM was powered down approximately 1300 DMT yesterday

- Location of COGNILAB Hardware

- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Interactions Questionnaires (status of MIPS)

WHAT WE HAVE

- Decreased Earth Science

- One APD of Fundamental Biology, 12 dosimeters of SMP

- Beetle (currently unpowered) in Priroda, draws 1 amp

- Greenhouse plants are alive, no power to SVET

- MiSDE (minus one uniaxial head) and EDLS were not impacted (except for the fact that we were never able to perform another inflight EDLS session (DJN))

- All MIM, QUELD, and TEM-2 were in Priroda; power is a concern

- MGBX facility and associated hardware (except photo consumables) were resident in Priroda; power is a concern

TEF - Mike reported one TEF had been powered on at 1930 DMT. TEF's temperature was +16.0C at start up. TEF contains blood tubes from second SLEEP session.

EXPERIMENT HARDWARE

Priroda -

Mike indicated that he had performed an orderly power down of all hardware before powering down the PUPs in Priroda.

Beetle -

The Beetle experiment is currently on batteries. It can continue for 30 days on batteries; however, the batteries are not sufficient to produce a light pulse. The next light pulse was to occur next Wednesday. The MOST team will try to negotiate for the 1 amp required for this to occur.

Greenhouse -

The Russians have agreed to allow power to be made available for a short time for SIGB operations in order that Mike can perform some, as of yet undetermined, operations on the plants. Mike has stated that he has all Greenhouse equipment except for the Leaf Bags (which were in Spektr).

TsUP just talked with FB folks concerning upcoming plans:

They had conferenced with Sichev concerning Greenhouse events/actions and had the following notes:

1. The power cable for Greenhouse is OK. It wasn't cut and can be plugged in

anywhere.

2. If at all possible, they would like to use 5 amps to turn on the SVET for

light tomorrow.

3. NO FIXATION IS PLANNED FOR TOMORROW. Therefore the SiGB is not

needed.

4. Leaf bag assemblies and manifolds are available at IBMP for placement on Progress.

MIR SYSTEMS

Crew reported at 17:47 DMT that the Vozdukh is on and operating.

No telemetry data was available.
