i>clicker Response System Instructions

To participate in the in-class exercises, you need to pick up an RF transmitter unit . These units allow you to transmit your response to a question together with your ID number.

LOGISTICS

  1. Pick up an i>clicker transmitter unit and two fresh AAA batteries from one of the TAs at the beginning of the semester. We will need to record your name and MIT ID number.
  2. You keep the unit for the entire semester; be sure to bring it to every lecture.
  3. At the end of the semester, you must return the unit in working condition to the teaching staff. If you fail to return a working unit, you will be assessed a $50 charge.

HOW TO USE THE UNITS

  1. Turn the unit on by pressing the on/off button. If the power light at the top doesn't light up, check the batteries.
  2. Check the transmitter ID number on the bottom of the unit; this number identifies your answer.
  3. When the i>clicker system is accepting answers, simply press the button corresponding to your answer.
  4. Verify that your answer has been recorded on the screen (see below for details).
  5. In case of problems, consult a member of the Teaching Staff.

HOW TO VERIFY THAT YOUR ANSWER HAS BEEN RECORDED

  1. A box containing the transmitter's ID number changes its color on the display each time an answer has been received.
  2. Neither your answer nor your identity are revealed to the audience.
  3. Answers are recorded as long as the timer on the screen has not reached zero. You may revise your answer by transmitting another answer, which then overwrites the previous one. Only your last choice is recorded. The instructor may limit the number of times you may revise your answers.
  4. When the timer for the question runs out, the instructor can project a graph showing answer statistics.
  5. If you transmit an answer that is out of range (e.g., choice 7 on a 4-choice question), your answer will be recorded as a wrong answer.

OOPS! FORGOT MY UNIT AT HOME...

We have a very limited number of additional units. If you forget to bring your unit to class, see a member of the Teaching Staff before the beginning of lecture to borrow a loaner unit. These units must be returned immediately at the end of the lecture. If there are no more loaner units, you will not be able to participate in the in-class exercises.
