17.423: The Causes and Prevention of War
Spring 1998
TA: David Mendeloff

Discussion Questions for 4 May

  1. WW II in Europe: You've now heard all sides of the debate over who is most to blame for encouraging Nazi aggression in Europe. Who do you think is the most guilty and why?

  2. WW II in Asia: Who do you think is most responsible for the Pacific war and why?

  3. Do you believe that either the war in Europe or the war in Asia was preventable? Should the Versailles Treaty have been even harsher toward Germany? Should the US have appeased Japan?

  4. Are there any general lessons for preventing future war that one can draw from both the war in Europe and the war in Asia? If so, what are they?
