Course Information

Class begins Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Lectures: TR2.30-4 (Room 37-212)
Lab: W2-5 (Room 5-007) or F11-2 (Room 5-007)

LAB WILL MEET THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES!!! Please wear close-toed shoes to lab (no flip-flops).

Lectures: Two weekly lectures introduce students to basic engineering concepts that extend your knowledge from 8.01/02 and 18.01/02 to practical engineering problems. Additional guest lectures on Robotics, Ocean Exploration, Engineering Ethics and Engineering Career Opportunities are also scheduled. Students teams formulate and complete space/earth/ocean exploration-based design projects with weekly milestones. Introduces core engineering themes, principles, and modes of thinking. Specialized learning modules enable teams to focus on the knowledge required to complete their projects, such as machine elements, electronics, design process, visualization and communication.

Labs: Labs meet weekly and introduce students to basic design and construction, RC control, and basic sensors (RFIDs). A special "exploration" lab with Professor Newman is scheduled for week two, where students will be able to use real-time tools for exploration similar to those used in the "real world". For the term project, students will use lab time to brainstorm concept designs, interate on design ideas, analyze design, and build and test their project in groups of 3-4 students. Solidworks 3D modeling, basic electronics and soldering, and some basic machine shop skills will be learned as well.

CI-Writing Component: This class includes a communications component which satisfies a students CI requirement (CI "pace" requirement that should be fullfilled by end of sophomore year). Students will work on technical writing skills and write 4-5 page technical reports on their design and the design process. Students will also present oral (powerpoint style) presentations and develop a Web-portfolio that showcases their design concept. The web-portfolio is a great way to tell prospective employers more about the experience you have!
