In Lecture 1, we asked the students to write
a statement of their thoughts on design and/or play in the form of a limerick.
The following are some of the staff's favorite student limericks.
____________________
since i was little i've always loved art
but at science i was also smart
i've learned a good design's
one that takes both and combines
them to where i can't tell the two things apart
____________________
I thought I was going to drop
My advisor told me to stop
If there's space in the class
I'll take it and pass
And my grade will of course be on top
____________________
I once had an American girl
Whose long, brown hair I would comb and curl.
I broke the brush one day-
No longer could I play-
So I gave my bro's Hot Wheels a whirl.
____________________
When I'm asked for my point of view,
On what design is - wish I knew!
It's not all aesthetics,
Or handy prosthetics,
But sometimes a mix of the two!
____________________
There is one weird class of mine
that teaches the art of design.
Our first class today,
we were instructed to play
to make our creativity much more refine.
____________________
And with all our brand new inventions,
We will break every standard convention,
The world will soon see,
That Two Double Oh Bee,
Is unparalleled in any dimension.
____________________
As kids we used to pretend
We were doctors or policemen
Little did we know
That play helped us grow
Into people we admired back then
____________________
A mother had a wish for her son
A real job, she wanted him to have one
Little did she know
What her gift would bestow
Some engineers engineer fun

Play is something you do
With toys, but with other things, too.
You can play in a box,
and make puppets with socks,
You can even play with your poo. (Eww!)

Toys were my passion, my love, and my life,
But I had grown old and filled up with strife.
My Lego’s were dusty,
The hot wheels were rusty.
But 2 “O” “O” B has revamped my life!

There was a girl at MIT
Who endeavored to earn her degree
But her UROP and HASS
So befuddled the lass
That she cried, "IHTFP!
I've been hosed for weeks upon weeks
Tooling with algorithmic techniques.
Between classes and DAPER
I've no time to caper.
It's enough to make anyone scream 'EECS!'
For the price of my 50-grand check,
I want puzzles and playgrounds at Tech!
But instead of toy cars,
We have GIRs
And I'm buried in work to my neck."
But then, deep within building 3,
She discovered 2.00B
With her fingers in paint,
She could find no complaint
And frolicked about with much glee.
So, to harried young folks on the move:
By more whimsy you would be behooved.
Set aside time for play
In the busiest day
And your humor will be much improved!
