About the instructor: George Barbastathis was born in Athens, Greece on January 20, 1971. He received the Electrical and Computer Engineer's degree from the National Technical University of Athens in April 1993, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in June 1994 and October 1997, respectively. After post-doctoral work at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, he joined the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in March 1999 as Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Barbastathis currently leads the 3D Optical Systems group at MIT, pursuing research on holographic optical imaging elements and novel nanopatterning and assembly methods for photonic systems. A growing interest in the 3DOS group is the joint optimization of hardware elements and digital post-processing to maximize information extraction from imaging (inverse) problems. Prof. Barbastathis' past research accomplishments include the holographic method of shift multiplexing, an interferometric corneal topographer, volume holographic confocal microscopy, resonant holography, and the first-ever real-time four-dimensional (spatial and spectral) optical sensor.
