2.74 OPTIMAL PRODUCT DESIGN

ASSIGNMENT 7. PERFORMANCE METRIC MODELING

Objective

Develop models of performance for a set of specifications on your product, expressed in terms of design team controllable variables.

Deliverable

A single report for your whole group. This should include:

  1. A House of Quality relating customer needs to specifications,
  2. A selection of at least 4 specifications to model,
  3. Derivations of the performance models for each of these specifications,
  4. Graphical sketches as needed. These can be hand sketches or CAD drawings. Please make no sketch smaller than 2 inches.
  5. Explanation of experiments on the current product you purchased to calibrate the metrics.

Work Required

As a part of this, I would expect you to:

  1. Get out and use the engineering analysis text that you will reference in your report to derive models of your specifications.
  2. Make approximations as necessary.
  3. Talk to other faculty, students, vendors, etc., as needed to develop your models.
  4. Conduct experiments in the Prototyping Lab 3-446 to measure the performance metric values on the current product to calibrate the constants in the model. These should also be cross referenced with ranges published in the literature.

Due: Monday November 15, 1999 at the start of class.
