Comments on function-related aspects

Client 1:

This rendering does a good job or communicating the design intent of the crane. A few important details could be added to the concept though. Perhaps consider adding a worm gearbox for the motor both to reduce the speed and provide holding torque when not being driven.

Reviewer 2:

I think there is a clear assembly and understanding how the crane would work and what its components. I think that it would be easier to understand if the video of the actual thing was included- reading the description showed that there were tests done with human subjects: "Because we had a fully functioning system, we were able to observe test subjects interacting with the game play to achieve the mission of operating the crane to return the control rods to the nuclear core." That would be great to see! I don't have a good understanding of scale of measurements just from this rendering. Practically, I'm also wondering what the implications of weight and material are on how this functions. Especially for the hand and ball weight. Also the speed.

Reviewer 3:

The crane model seems easy to fabricate and assemble. I do wish the crane model would have included the electronic lever for Z as well as the mechanical crank so I could get a better picture of how the whole system works, especially since they are the only physical parts that the players would be interacting with.

CAD for the crane looked well-thought out. It's great your sketch model was refined enough that you were able to move so far ahead with this design. As you mentioned on the side, it'll be important to make sure that quality control is a priority, because if the crane gets stuck / the rope is caught, there isn't really a plan B beyond having someone go in and fix the room. Would be great to get some stats from user testing on how often people are able to do it successfully. I think you're in a really good place to start building.

Reviewer 5:

The exploded view are helpful to understand how this setup is put together, and the structure seems solid. I am a little unsure how the users control the z direction of the crane, and in the future it might be interesting to see how the curtains would be set up to vary the number of players. For the construction of the control rods, the acrylic cap could also be inset inside the PVC body tube rather than attached on top. This inset inside would give more area to attach glue to, and might be less likely to fall off if the control rod is dropped many times. Through play testing it might be interesting to see if there are any corner locations the control rods can easily get stuck in, and if persay the corner at the join of the core cavity and the floor can be rounded.

Client 1:

This crane trolley looks right, and the color, shape, and warning marks do a good job at communicating the right feel and intended function to players

Reviewer 2:

Again renders would be easier to understand with scale or a person included in the rendering. I got a better idea in the storyboard than in the assembly drawing but it would be helpful to see in both. Also I am wondering a sense of what materials will be used. I'm glad that there was color included in crane rendering and a warning sign was a nice touch that added to the aesthetics of the room!

Reviewer 3:

The renderings are done well. One suggestion would be to make different renderings with when different number of players are in the room (show how crowded they would be around the glass wall & how the blinds would block operators' views) to illustrate how the game adapts to the group size.

Reviewer 5:

The design of the room has a consistent form factor and a clean appearance. The light green for the majority of the room allows the users to focus on the crane in the center which is a bright yellow. With the extra screens that the users aren't supposed to interact with it might be helpful to display warning messages that go along with the story. They could say things like "control rod crisis" or "crane in manual override mode" or the timer could be labeled "time remaining before control rods XXX" and then could switch to "control rods have XXXed" when the time expires. Finally the room looks nice in both the top images of "room styling illustration" and "room rendering no glow" but seems to change size between the two renderings. The bottom room size seems a little more realistic.
