alien message 1 concept sketch comments

Reviewer 1:

It is unclear how the guests are supposed to interact with this.

Is it just a special effect?

Do whichever lights flicker have to do with the message being played?

Are the flickering lights the message?

I think a little more explanation would have made this clear.

It is just unknown how the flickering lights relate to the message playing.

Reviewer 2:

This is a very straightforward/easy to implement effect. It could come across as spooky, if that's what you're going for. Are the lights flickering uniformly, or will there be a pattern that corresponds to the alien's message/be a clue for the players?

Client 3:

Lights in the ceiling are a fine idea, though maybe not needed if the entire floor is essentially a light.

Do you want everyone looking at the ceiling, as in the sketch, when the puzzle is on the floor?

Reviewer 4:

This could be very cool, especially if the lights are the same color as the tiles/panels and blink in a corresponding pattern as the message plays. The one issue it could present is attracting guests' attention, especially if they are focusing on something else. This could possibly be solved by playing the message several times, or having lights in other places as well.

alien message 2 concept sketch comments

Reviewer 1:

Similar critique to concept 1.

It is unclear how the guests are supposed to interact with this.

Is it just a special effect?

Is the beam of light highlighting something that the guests need to interact with?

Is the message in the beam of light?

I think a little more explanation would have made this clear.

All the explanation says is that it attracts everyone's attention.

To what?

Reviewer 2:

This would be a good idea if there's something in the center of the room that you want to draw everyone's attention to. Otherwise, it could be confusing to create a focus point that contain relevant or helpful information.

Client 3:

A beam of light could look very cool, especially with haze in the air.

Will this help the guests by drawing attention to the right spot, or add an unnecessary layer to the game?

Do you think they will realize the beam of light is pointing them to the floor, and is that better than lighting up the floor itself?

Reviewer 4:

A cone of light is a nice effect. I wonder if there's a way to make it more interesting than I bright cone. While a hologram would be incredibly cool and natural feeling, that seems a bit technically challenging. Would there be someway to maybe hint at a 3D communication/alien telepresence while still using simple technology?

alien message 3 concept sketch comments

Reviewer 1:

This is a great concept.

It's a bit more interactive than pressing the button to hear all the tones as illustrated in the storyboard.

Relating the buttons to the tiles is a great way to get users to make the connection.

There is also plenty of potential to make the control panel look super sci-fi and cool.

Reviewer 2:

It would be extremely helpful to be able to replay the message, especially if players don't initially understand what's going on/remember the pattern. A control panel is a good way of doing it, but putting it in the corner limits the number of people who can interact with it. I also think you need a more direct analogue to the floor tiles than just choice of materials. Maybe you could design the control panel so that it mirrors the visual language of the floor tiles (ex: if the floor is a grid, make the control panel buttons rectangular/gridded).

Client 3:

This idea I like a lot.

Perhaps not in this exact physical manifestation, but the idea of having a control/playback dashboard, where guests can re-cue the audio to work through the puzzle step by step, is a great idea.

Reviewer 4:

I like that they have the ability to replay the message. That'll definitely help them in remembering it and solving the puzzle. The panels on the front are a nice visual clue, especially if the colors are incorporated into the entire experience. What is the human interface, though? Is there a button or do they start pushing the panels? I think if some thought was put into that, this could be a great unit.

Overall concept sketch clarity and presentation

Reviewer 1:

Very clean and crisp and easy to navigate.

The sketches are all very clear and look great.

More explanation would definitely clarified the first two concepts.

Reviewer 2:

Your sketches are well drawn, and convey your ideas well. For the first sketch, it would have been nice if you represented the flickering/change in lighting in some way to clarify your concept.

Client 3:

The drawings are beautiful and clear.

Very attractively presented.

Reviewer 4:

Nice, clear, simple. The caption text helped explain what was happening a lot. I'm also impressed that the scale always seemed to be right.
