radiation gun design: turbine concept sketch comments

Reviewer 1:

I understand that the drones that are proposed go into the turbine. Sorry if I am wrong. Like a 2-axis security camera, the laser pointer will have a two-axis gimbal set which will be hidden inside the housing of the "turbine". I hope I am correct.

I believe that the "drone" will only be partially visible because most of it will be hidden inside the "turbine". The first drone is simple and clean as you say, without much detail.

Reviewer 2:

This design looks slightly more 'bad' or 'scary' and is a better option for a security system attack.

However, it still looks more like something I would imagine helping the adventurers rather than part of an attack sequence by the security system.

Client 3:

Nice concepts -- I like the exploration of the visual intent for the laser gimbal.

I think this first one looks a bit too cute/non-threatening.

We want the guests to know they should avoid the beam.

Reviewer 4:

I'm confused about how the turbine differs from drones 1/2/3. Is this a drone design, or another standalone prop? I like the heavy machinery influence, but it looks a little too sleek/clean/perfectly round for it to really convey danger. If you're going for the jet turbine look, maybe you could include rotating fins?

Reviewer 5:

I agree with the description.

The turbine and our recognition of it help to suggest powerful machinery.

What is the planned size of the turbine? I think this design would create a feeling of danger no matter the size (within reason). I like the detail in the bottom half of the turbine.

Would the small ovals be the same color as the laser? would it light up?

radiation gun design: robot drone 1 & 2 concept sketch comments

Reviewer 1:

The second drone has a more sci-fi and alien look. I however, doubt whether people will be able to clearly see the drone, especially when there is a bright source of light at the center.

It will be more interesting if the drone has some contrasting colors, or lights pouring out of it, that make it visible.

Reviewer 2:

This first design looks pretty friendly compared to the final design option, so it might not be the best choice for a scary security system attack.

Visitors might be confused by the function of the emitter.

Client 3:

This looks nice -- a combination of simple to build with a neat aesthetic.

Reviewer 4:

Drone 1 is very utilitarian, and doesn't quite convey the fear that a laser bent on irradiating all humans should inspire. I like the more skeletal look of Drone 2. While futuristic, it doesn't scream 'alien' or 'danger' to me.

Reviewer 5:

I believe these drones would create feelings in the users just as you describe. The level of simplicity you want depends on the feeling of the room.

In my personal opinion I think drone one is a little too friendly for a security drone.

I am also curious what materials each drone would be built in.

I particularly like the x design.

radiation gun design: insect drone concept sketch comments

Reviewer 1:

I like the insect idea. I believe the butterfly wings are on the "turbine" and not the drone. That will look interesting. However, my doubt persists whether people will really be able to see such fine details at all.

Reviewer 2:

This final design looks very interesting, and definitely has more of an ominous feel with the insect-look.

However, I still feel that the form does not communicate its function as part of a security system attack on the adventurers.

Something more laser gun or missile shaped might help better communicate the fact that the system is not doing a routine scan check on the guests but rather launching an attack.

Client 3:

This one looks awesome, and if the alien race is bug-like this could be a great fit.

This is clearly a much more complex prop to generate, and there would have to be bang-for-the-buck conversations.

Reviewer 4:

This is my favorite of the three!

I like that it conveys danger/malice, and is definitely the most 'alien' of your ideas. Would the oculus pivot independently, or would the whole drone rotate around? I can imagine the insect wings unfolding as a really cool effect. The insect theme presents a lot of opportunities to play with the entire room environment too (some sort of hive design?). My only concern is that it might be too specific to be fit into whatever story line 5wits decides to go with.

Reviewer 5:

I think this concept has the most "wow" factor.

The design is very detailed and has a much greater affect on me. The insect drone seems very dangerous especially because the design is foreign.

The hexagonal "wing" motif confirms that this is an "alien" drone, antagonistic and unpredictable.

This design may be hard to pull of because of its complexity.

Overall concept sketch clarity and presentation

Reviewer 1:

The website is pretty interactive and attractive. I however found it hard to navigate through the storyboards. The text on the back of the images was not so evident. I hunted for descriptions for long before I eventually figured them out. Also, the descriptions were not there on the group page that showed all concepts together.

Link to the personal site was not evident. I would have preferred directly being directed to that without clicking so many times.

The sketches were really good and professional. However, the presentation and the descriptions do not give me a perfect idea of what you intended to convey. I had to look at other team members' concepts to understand what you were talking about.

Reviewer 2:

Martin gave a clear description for each of his concepts, and included a short introduction to his group's storyboard.

This was a great addition in case people did not first look at his group's storyboard to find the context within the story. It was difficult to flip back and forth between the captions and the sketches- I would have preferred to have seen the captions at the same time as the sketches.

Also the formatting of the website, with each square moving whenever my mouse passed over it, was distracting.

I think that once I had selected a sketch, that feature should be turned off, at least for the active sketch.

Beautiful drawings.

Reviewer 4:

Your sketches are awesome (especially the insect drone - nicely done!).

I would have liked some more context in the sketch in regards to how the drone would be oriented in the room. The website design is really clean, but I found it disorienting to deal with all the movement. The flipping and zooming in and out and pivoting was a little too much, and it took me a while to understand that I had to flip the sketches over to read the explanations.

Reviewer 5:

The website animations are so cool! Very futuristic.

It's entertaining that the thumbnails move with your mouse.

It is however very distracting when trying to read the info card or look at the sketches.

I think the animations are great for the intro page, but keeping the pages with sketches simple helps to focus on the content. The content itself is very clear thanks to the info cards.
