Quality and thoroughness of human-use analysis and improvement suggestions

Reviewer 1:

Although I enjoyed your introduction to McCormick Hall, I don't think its history was as relevant to your analysis that much. I personally would have wanted to see more information on doing laundry in college and how college students today generally do it on different campuses, or an estimate of how much they pay annually. I think you outlined the commons problems that McCormick residents face pretty well. You walked us through the experience of doing laundry in great detail. The dimension of your pictures were pretty off, so it was hard to follow them (I ended up just reading the text). The videos were unnecessary, but a cool addition to your website. Maybe you could have taken a video of the process of swiping the ID and working with TechCash rather than the laundry and dryer cycle.

I really liked your user interviews and hearing about their thoughts. I liked the outline of pros and cons, which helped me figure out what problems exactly you were trying to solve. Most of the solutions you proposed were thoughtful and would improve the experience a lot. In general, it seems like the machines need to give more information about cycle time and soil level. (It was also very surprising to me that a cycle took 17 minutes! Our washers take 40 minutes and dryers, 60 minutes!). Your ideas for maintenance were cool and completely doable (I wonder why they don't do this already in every dorm). Your solution for communication between the machines and users seems to work fine (I personally think a mobile app that notifies users when each cycle is done might work better). Your idea of marked bins and magnets for users to put their other people's clothes in sounds cool, but I don't see it adding a lot of advantages to the experience. I think if every user puts their laundry baskets on top of the machine they were using, the next user can easily put their clothes in that basket if the cycle is done. People are just really bad at following through with these general rules, and I don't see your bin system changing that).

Reviewer 2:

I thought the topic of the analysis was very good - laundry is something we all have to grapple with so I definitely feel the pain here. But, the analysis was very broad. You talk about the entire cycle of doing laundry, and also the physical state of the machines / the tech needed to operate the machines. It would have been helpful to just choose one the steps, maybe how you would think about changing the control panel to make it more clear on how much time it would take to wash or dry a load.

I have the same suggestion for the improvements - to just pick one part of the laundry process. I liked your machine settings suggestions, it would have been great to see that detailed a little more.

Reviewer 3:

The analysis is quite thorough - the user experience is well-documented, and the video is very helpful in understanding the steps of using the washer & dryer. The suggested improvements are also thoughtful and target different aspects of the laundry experience (I particularly like the organized bin system idea!). Two improvement suggestions would be:

(1) Elaborate more on the learning curve for first-time users - while some more information is given in the 'improvements' section, more in-depth explanation on the non-machine-setting-related problems inexperienced users have in the 'experience' or 'summary' sections (ex. forgetting to take out lint/ used too much detergent) may offer more insights to what other aspects could be improved on

(2) Include a sketch of the laundry room with proposed improvements (new signage, bin system) so the readers could better picture how the room would look

Reviewer 4:

The "Experience" section was really thorough, and I appreciated that the ideas explored there were summarized in the pro / con list in the next section. Suggestions for improvement:

- This is more on the presentation end, but the images were sized a little weirdly and got stretched vertically on the "Experience" page, so they were hard to read.

- The "Improvements" section was well laid out but a bit long; I would have loved a one sentence summary at the top.

Both of these suggestions are super minor, though, because on the whole I really liked it!

Clarity and presentation of human-use experience analysis

Reviewer 1:

Everything was generally presented pretty clearly. Except for pictures that were off and made it hard for me to follow the user experience. The website was simple but easy to navigate through. Again, it was really cool that you included videos, but you could have put videos of you struggling with the card reader and choosing cycles or soil level, which seemed more relevant to the problems and issues you were trying to solve later in your analysis.

Reviewer 2:

I loved the layout and the colors of the website. It was very clean and easy to follow. However, most of the photos were very stretched and it was hard to tell what the photos were.

Reviewer 3:

I think the analysis is very clear, and the website design makes it very easy to navigate between different sections (with the combination of top menu bar + previous/next buttons at the bottom, I don't have to scroll up and down much). The only suggestion would be to make sure the photos are of the right dimensions - they are all kind of distorted when I viewed them :(

Reviewer 4:

The website was really well-designed! I liked the headers at the top, and I appreciated the "next" and "previous" buttons at the bottom that saved me from scrolling up after each page. The "Improvements" section was detailed and well laid out.
