A message about the program from our director:

Our program will feature the music of American composers Virgil Thomson and Charles Fussell, both with Boston connections.

Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) studied composition at Harvard and in Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger (famous French composition teacher... many famous American composers went to study with her including Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein) and hung out with cool people like French poet, novelist, and artist Jean Cocteau, American writer, poet, and art collector Gertrude Stein, AND my hero Igor Stravinsky!! Read more about Virgil Thomson here.

Eastman School of Music-trained composer Charles Fussell was Virgil Thomson's assistant and close friend when both were living in New York City...and...Charles was one of my composition teachers when I was a grad student at Boston University! Charles is now Professor of Composition at Rutgers University. Charles has agreed to come and work with us on his music and will give a pre-concert lecture on the music of Virgil Thomson as well as his own music. Read more about Charles here.
