I．もう＋Aff. "already; yet"

　　まだ＋Ｎｅｇ．     "not yet"

 
れい(Examples)

    1.A: もうお昼を食べましたか。    
         Have you eaten lunch already?    
      B: いいえ、まだ食べていません。/いいえ、まだです。
         No, I haven't eaten (it) yet.
    2.A: もうお昼を食べますか。
         Are you going to eat lunch already?
      B: いいえ、まだ食べません。後で食べます。
         No, I'm not.  I'm going to eat it later.
    3.A: もう四時になりましたか。
         Is it four o'clock already?
      B: ええ、もうなりました。四時十分すぎですよ。
         Yes, it is.  It's ten past four.
    4.A: 山田さんに、もうれんらくした？
         Did you already contact Mr. Yamada?
      B: あ、まだして(い)ない。わすれて(い)た！
         Oh, not yet.  I forgot!

れんしゅう (Exercises)

Answer the following questions with both yes and no.

1. もう日本へ行きましたか。はい… いいえ…
2. もう今日の新聞は、来ましたか。はい… いいえ…
3. ご主人はもうおかえりになりましたか。はい… いいえ…

   Compare:   
              分かりますか。
	      分かりますね。
	      分かるでしょう？
	      分かります？        *The final す becomes fully voiced.

Express the following in Japanese.

Ａ：(〜を)Ｎominalにする      "make...to be N; decide on N"

  Compare:    
    1.  むすこが社長になりました。
        My son became a company president.
	むすこを社長にしました。
        I made my son to be a company president.
    2. 教しつがきれいになりました。
       The classroom became clean.
       教しつをきれいにしました。
       We cleaned the classroom.

  Note: Polite equivalents of Ｘにする is Ｘになさる↑and Ｘにいたす↓.

         I decide on tempura.
     2. 次のかいぎは、月曜日の十時からにしませんか。

   of word processor.

Miscellaneous Notes

1.{おなか/電車/店, etc.}がすく

    2時すぎだから、もう店はすいていると思います。
    It's past two, so I think the store is already emptied out.

2.ちゅうもんする  "order" (e.g. in a restaurant)
    天ぷらをちゅうもんしました。
    I ordered tempura.

  XにYをたのむ "ask X to do Y"
    この仕事を山本さんにたのんで下さい。
    Please ask Yamamoto to do this job.

  聞く "ask"
    おまわりさんに聞いたけど、分かりませんでした。
    I asked a policeman, but could not understand.

  うかがう "ask" (humble, polite version of 聞く)
    分からないので、先生にうかがいます。
    I will ask the teacher because I don't understand.
