Lesson 20 Practice Quiz Part 2 Answers

.     a) Right! The translation is:

"Please deliver 2 to 3 pieces (to sensei, supervisor, etc.) for me."

b) Wrong.

はず is a nominal, so its preceding modifier must be DIRECT-FORM. 3個とどけるはずです "It is expected that s/he will deliver 2 to 3 pieces."

2、3個とどけたはずです "It is expected that s/he delivered ~."

b) Right! The translation is:

"Let's have 2 to 3 pieces delivered."

もらおう is a direct-style Consultative form ~ましょう (Review the formation of the consultative form).

8. a) Wrong.

When a verbal/adjectival sentence occurs as a modifier of a

following nominal, connective should not be used in between.

重いはこですね "It is a heavy box, right?"

b) Right! The translation is:

"It is the box which is sold within the city, right?"

c) Right! The translation is:

"It is the box which you used many times, right?"

d) Wrong. Iroiro is a nominal: 色々な学会 (various academic conferences). Also, note that no particle is used when IROIRO hooks up with a predicate as a manner pattern: 色々教えてください(Please teach me in many ways).

e) Right! The translation is:

"It is the box which was useful, right?"

9.    a) Right! The translation is:

"It is extremely good!"

b) Right! The translation is:

"Being one phone call, it is ok (One phone call will do)."

c) Wrong (refer to Lesson 20 Practice Test 1 #5).

The correct sentence is:

心配しない方がいいよ "It would be better for you not to be worried."

d) Right! The translation is:

"Bringing (someone) here is okay."

10. a) Right! The translation is:

"I believed that there would be many transfers, but .." In this sentence, つもり indicates PERSONAL EXPECTATION.

b) Wrong.

When /nominal + copula/ occurs as a modifier of a following nominal (つもり), copula  だ must be changed to (な in the case of nominal).

はんたいのつもりでしたけど "I believed that it was the opposite."

c) Right! The translation is:

"I thought (expected) that I could do it by myself, but.."

11. a) Right! The translation is:

"Shall we/I get on the car?" nor-u -> nor+oo

b) Wrong. X ni/kara [Y o] kariru (borrow [Y] from X). The correct sentence is 車を借りようか "Shall we/I rent a car?" (kari-ru -> kari+yoo)

c) Wrong. Change X ni to X de (by means of X, in this sentence.

車で通おうか。"Shall we/I commute by car?"

kayo(w)-u + kayo(w)+oo

12. a) Right! The translation is:

"Won't you help me take care of the cat?"

b), c) Wrong. Predicates must be nominalized with a nominalizer in front of phrase particle such as .

赤ちゃんをねかすのを手伝ってくれませんか "Won't you help me put the baby to sleep?"

時こく表を調べるのを手伝ってくれませんか "Won't you help me check the timetable?"

13. a) Wrong. はず is a nominal, so copula だ/です should precede

けど. かぜをひいてねているはずだけどねえ "S/he is expected to be in bed having caught a cold, but.."

b) Wrong. Instead of a regular /nominal+da/ negative pattern, ~はずが/はない is used (JSL part II p.217): そんなはずはないよ "There is no expectation like that." かぜをひいてねているはずが(は)ないよ "It is not expected (there is no way) for him/her to be in bed having caught a cold."

c) Wrong. /~はずです/ is a /nominal + copula/ sentence. Thus, when it is used as a sentence modifier, ~はずだ->~はずの~.

かぜをひいてねているはずの子ども? "is s/he the child who is expected to be in bed having caught a cold?"
