SP1: Express different states of actions : ~ところ (usually written in ひらがな)

   Vていたところだ “have been ~ing”

  

 

V (imp.)+ところだ “be about to do…”

 

  1. すみませんが、これから出かけるところなので、、、。

I’m sorry, but since I was just about to leave….

  1. 映画を見に行くところなんですが、いっしょにいかがですか。

I was just about to go see a movie, but how about going together?

  1. これからカウンターに荷物を預けるところです。

I am just going to check my luggage at the counter.

  1. 今から先生にわからない問題を聞きに行くところです。

I am just going now to ask Teacher about the problems I don’t understand.

 

V (imp.)+ところだった “was about to do.., almost did..”

1.           ああ、危(あぶ)なかった。もう少しで間違ったバスに乗るところだった。

Whoa, that was close. I was just about to get on the wrong bus.

2.           今日貸してもらった本を、電車の中に忘れるところだった！

The book that was lent to me today, I almost forgot it on the train!

3.           彼がそんなだめな男だとは知らないで結婚するところでしたが、結婚前に気がついてよかったです。

I was about to marry him without knowing that he was such a bad man, but it’s a good thing I realized it before getting married.

4.           あわてていたので、鍵(かぎ)を鞄(かばん)に入れずに外出するところでした。

Because I was flustered, I was just about to go out without putting my key in my bag.

5.           遅く起きたので、飛行機(ひこうき)に間に合わないところでした。

Because I woke up late, I almost wasn’t on time for my airplane.

 

 

Vているところだ “be in the midst of ~ing, be in the process of ~ing”

 

  1. 弟は朝ご飯を食べているところです。

My younger brother is in the midst of eating breakfast.

  1. 今は「ノルウェーの森」という本を読んでいるところだ。

I am now in the midst of reading a book called “Norwegian Wood”.

  1. 専門を何にするか考えているところです。

I am in the process of thinking what I should major in.

  1. 広くて日当りのいいアパートを探しているところに、友村さんが自分のアパートを一年借りてもらいたいと言ってきた。

I was in the process of looking for a spacious apartment with good sun exposure, when Tomamura-san came to say that he wanted to have me rent his own apartment for one year.

  1. コンピューターが故障(こしょう)しちゃって、困っているところです。

The computer is completely broken down, and now I am in trouble.

  1. 橋本さんにプログラムを書いてもらっているところに、弟が会いに来た。

I was in the process of having Hashimoto-san write a program, when my younger brother came to see me.

  1. そろそろ日本に戻りたいと思っているところです。

I am in the process of thinking that I want to go back to Japan soon.

  1. 先生がお帰りになるのを待っているところに、アメリカから電話が入った。

I was in the process of waiting for Teacher to go home, when a call from America came in.

  1. 顔を洗っているところに大きな地震(じしん)がきた。

I was in the process of washing my face, when there was a big earthquake.

  1. 洋子さんは山田さんが図書館の前で立っているところを見たそうです。

Yoko-san says that she saw Yamada-san in the process of standing in front of the library.

1.           あぶないところ、助けてくださって、どうもありがとうございました。

Thank you very much for helping me out at that dangerous spot.

2.           お忙しいところ、申し訳ありませんが、ちょっとお話ししたいことがありまして、、。

Excuse me, I know you’re busy, but I just have something that I would like to talk to you about….

3.           お休みのところ、お邪魔(じゃま)して失礼致(いた)しました。

I am very sorry for bothering you on your vacation.

4.           映画の一番大事なところでトイレに行きたくなり、席に戻った時には話が全然(ぜんぜん)分からなくなってしまった。

I had to go to the bathroom at the most important point in the movie and when I returned to my seat I no longer understood anything about the story.

 

 V (perf.)+ところだ “has just finished ~ing, be on the point of having just completed..”

 

  1. この仕事を済ませたところで、ちょっとコーヒーでも飲んで休みましょう。

As soon as I have finished this work, let’s go drink coffee or something and take a break.

  1. 皿(さら)を洗ったところに、ルームメートが帰って来た。

I had just finished washing the dishes, when my roommate came home.

  1. 今、番組が始まったところだから、早くテレビをつけて。

The television program has just started now, so hurry and turn on the television.

  1. もう１１時ごろかと思ったけど、まだ１０時になったところだった。

I thought it was already around 11 o’clock, but it’s only just now turned 10 o’clock.

  1. 今学校を出たところですから、あと３０分ほどでそちらに着きます。

I just left school now, so I will arrive there in about 30 more minutes.

  1. せっかく新しい学校でみんなと友達(だち)になったところで、父の仕事の都合でまた違う町に住むことになってしまい、残念で仕方がない。

SP2: Requests usingもらう／いただく　“Can’t  I (May I) have you do…?”

 

 

  1. 忙しいところ悪いけど、1時間ほど手伝ってもらえる？

Excuse me, I know you’re busy, but can I have you help out for about an hour?

  1. 暑いですから、窓を開けてもらえませんか。

Because it is hot, can I please have you open the window?

  1. コーヒーを切らしているので、買って来てもらえないでしょうか。

Since we are out of coffee, I wonder if I could have you go and buy some?

  1. こちらには届いていないようですので、おそれいりますが、もう一度送っていただけないでしょうか。

Since it seems that it has not been delivered here, I’m sorry but I wonder if I can have you send it one more time?

  1. 申し訳ありませんが、もう一度説明して頂けないでしょうか。

Excuse me, but I wonder if I could have you explain it one more time?

 

SP4: Expressing an Attempt: V (Volitional form ‘-yoo’)+とする

 

 

  1. 連絡しようとしたが、電話も通じないし、メールも戻ってきてしまった。

I tried to contact you, but the telephone does not go through, and what’s more the email ended up coming back.

  1. 父は薬が大嫌いで、具合が悪い時でも絶対(ぜったい)に飲もうともしない。

My father hates medicine, so even when his health is bad he absolutely will not even try to drink it.

  1. そばを食べようとしたところに、電話がかかってきて、切った時にはもう冷めてしまっていた。

When I was trying to eat soba, a phone call came in, and when I hung up it was already cold.

  1. 健康(けんこう)のためにたばこをやめようと思ったけど、やっぱり無理だ。

For the sake of my health, I thought I would try to quit smoking, but after all it’s impossible.

  1. りさちゃんにメールを書こうとした時に、ちょうどりさちゃんから電話がかかってきてびっくりした。

Just as I was trying to write a letter to Risa-chan, a phone call came in from her and I was surprised.

  1. あの学生は、毎日遊(あそ)んでいるだけで、全然(ぜんぜん)勉強しようとしない。

That student, all he does is play around, and does not try to study at all.

I tried to buy a new dictionary, but I gave up after all.

I was trying to carry a heavy thing when all of a sudden my back started to hurt.

  1. わざわざ家に来(こ)ようとしてくれたみたいだけど、留守で悪かったね。

It seems like you tried to come all the way to my house for me, but I’m sorry I was out.

 

-oo とする＋ところだ。　

 

  1. お茶を飲もうとしているところに、田中さんがオフィスに戻って来た。

Tanaka-san came back to the office when I was trying to drink tea.

  1. 私が着いた時、神田さんもちょうど建物(たてもの)に入ろうとしているところでした。

Just as I arrived, Shinda-san was also about to go into the building.

  1. 北野君はちょうど勉強を始めようとしているところだったから、邪魔(じゃま)しないように帰って来ました。

Since Kitano-kun was just beginning to study, I left so that I would not bother him.

  1. 彼はかばんから財布(さいふ)を出そうとしているところみたいですね。

It looks like he is about to take his wallet out of his bag.

  1. お金を払おうとしたところで、１００円しか持っていないことに気がついた。

When I was about to pay money, I realized I was carrying only 100 yen.

  1. 島本さんがタクシーに乗ろうとしているところを見たんですね。

You saw Shimamoto-san when he was about to get into a taxi, didn’t you.

 

SP5: かしら (feminine) and っけ

 

 

  1. 座(ざ)談会は、2時からだっけ？3時からだっけ？

The symposium begins at 2 o’clock right? or at 3 o’clock?

  1. その番組は何曜日だったっけ。

What day of the week was the television program on?

  1. 彼はどちらの病院のお医者さんでしたっけ。

That man was a doctor from which hospital?

  1. お宅のお父さんが九州にいらしたのは、何年前でしたっけ。

How many years ago was your father in Kyushu?

  1. 駅からまっすぐ行って、つきあたりで、右に曲がるんだったっけ？

Straight from the train station, turn right at the end of the street right?

  1. あの人、誰(だれ)だったっけ？どこかで会ったような気がするんだけど、、。

Who was that person? It’s that I have a feeling that I’ve met them somewhere before but….

  1. 私、そんなメールを送ったっけ。覚えてないなあ。

Did I send that email? I don’t remember it.

  1. 留守みたいですね。どこに行ったのかしら。

It looks like she is out. I wonder where she went.

I wonder if my older sister also called Tanaka-san to go to the party.
