IV. Course Objectives

This course covers Lessons 28-30 of JSL. We will expand grammar and vocabulary by further developing four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The goal is to acquire the ability to use Japanese appropriately with increasing spontaneity emphasized.

     * 	The four lowest daily grades will be dropped.
    ** 	The one lowest vocabulary quiz score will be dropped.

IMPORTANT: There will be NO MAKE-UPS for missed performances and quizzes. Homework assignments must be submitted at the beginning of class on the due date.

Daily Grade

In class, you are asked to perform Core Conversations and Drills of each lesson. The instructor will check your performance in terms of your pronunciation, accuracy, fluency, and naturalness according the following scale:

        10 = excellent performance
	9 = clearly well-prepared; strong performance with minor erros
	8 = clearly prepared; fair performance
	7 = evidently prepared but weak in major areas
	6 = present, but evidently unprepared
	0 = absent

IMPORTANT: Students should practice Core Conversations and Drills by listening to the tapes. Tapes are available in the LLARC(Language Learning and Resource Center). Do not underestimate the importance ofworking with tapes.

VI. Attendance Policy

  1. It is essential that you attend the class regularly. If you miss more than five classes you must withdraw from the course.
  2. You must regularly attend the section which you are registered in unless you have made official arrangements with the instructor at the beginning of the term. If you have to switch sections due to conferences, class conflicts, and interviews, you must notify the instructor either by phone or talking directly at least one day before. Do not leave a message on the phone or send an e-mail message.
  3. In case of an emergency only you may participate in class activities and quizzes in another section without the aforementioned one-day-before permission. Oversleeping is not regarded as an emergency.

VII. Other Information

  1. Japanese Lunch Table: For those who are interested in practicing Japanese with Japanese people on campus, there is a Japanese language lunch table. The atmosphere is fun and informal, and everyone, regardless of language ability, is encouraged to drop by!
  2. There is a Japanese program bulletin board on the second floor of Bldg. 14N. It provides information on Japan-related events, educational opportunites, language exchange, etc. The MIT Japan Program (E38, 7th floor) also has a bulletin board.
