Rocks are hard. Hard places are also hard. In general, hard places are not very comfortable. (For example, metal stools, such as the ones that MIT provides to its architecture students, are uncomfortable.) Thus when one is between two hard places, that person is extremely uncomfortable. It is a very difficult situation to be between a rock and a hardplace.
