After a few moments, thoughtfully digesting the Monsieur’s words, I looked to the Madame, “Your husband is quite cautious towards this new document that represents the people of France. Do you hold the same apprehension for these newly born ideas that seized hold of the National Assembly and propelled them towards this strange course?”

That quiet smile, refreshing for the soul, sparked on her lips, but she put it down with a lady’s grace and replied to my direct question in a kindly manner, “Begging my husband’s pardon to speak on so great a matter of politics, I share his caution. We do not want anarchy in this nation of long precedent. The men of the National Assembly are smart men but men have been known to make mistakes in their pursuit of good will. They move too fast for my tastes.”

Glancing back at the eyes of the Monsieur I could tell that he was satisfied with the answer. He almost beamed at her before looking back at me, saying, “Exactly, dear, exactly. The stability of the nation is of utmost importance. Let the German princes and barons fight between themselves; France will always stand as one whole nation.”

Perhaps the Madame would have indulged my humor further but the Monsieur interposed himself between us as he spoke, capturing my attention. I returned a smile, nodding in tentative agreement, “France should stand whole, but I believe that France is slowly coming apart at the seams. The various countryside revolts show that there is great unhappiness among the people. Perhaps this solution was too much, but I think it was the best of several poor options.”

A grim smile was returned, “We shall see what is in store of France in the coming months. I do not believe I hold this view because I am pessimistic that but because I am realistic. I sincerely hope that all will be for the best.” He offered his arm to his wife and she accepted, then the two walked towards where his coat was hung, “But now I must leave; we have a performance to attend and we will be late if we do not hurry.”

“My apologies for keeping you, but I did think that this news was impressive enough to keep you here for a little while.” I nodded my head to him, differentially, then made my way to the door. Opening it for them, we headed down the stairs.

Walk downstairs with the Monsieur and Madame.
