Thomas Black, Ferrier

Thomas Black learned his trade, the trimming and shoeing of horses' feet, from another local Ferrier, Lynn Armstrong. A resident of Georgetown since the mid 70's, Thomas went through most of his schooling here and considers the town his home. He says t here is still plenty of work for ferriers, noting a recent Georgetown HS grad who has started to learn the trade. The work is mostly "kid horses and pets" however, a sign of the change in Georgetown's economy.

"I don't like the new Georgetown," Thomas says. "I want to be able to cross Main Street [in a car] without sitting through three lights. All we need is a mall in Georgetown--like we don't have enough traffic already." Thomas truly believes that the sma ll town character of Georgetown is worth preserving. "A small town isn't a Starbucks on the corner...you should have barber shops and hardware stores and theaters on the Square, not portrait galleries and antique shops."

Asked if he was considering going to a more out-of-the-way town, Thomas simply replied "No." But he had one request for newcomers to the area: "You're moving here because it's different, so don't come here and try to change it."
