Objecting to Posters

Also on display was a collection of posters used by various MIT fraternities, dormitories, and living groups to advertise their parties. Several of the students at the Bake Sale have been active in protesting the sexual imagery on these posters, stirring up debate among the larger student body.

In the spring semester, Zeta Beta Tau used photographs of a semi-nude man and woman on posters for their "Bling, Bling" Party. "For me, seeing the posters was really a slap in the face," said Julia Steinberger. In addition to writing an opinion column in The Tech, the MIT student newspaper, Julia put up counterposters featuring a drawing of a penis being cut by scissors. "It was a way of trying to viscerally demonstrate that it was a really bad feeling for other people to see those posters," she said.
