In an opinion column in The Tech, Brice Smith argued that transporting nuclear waste to its proposed storage site in Yucca Mountain would create "mobile Chernobyls." The column and banner appeared on the 16th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
Other issues included opposition to genetically-modified food and support for worker unionization at Star Market.

Individual students also participate in a number of outside groups and organizations; Julia Steinberger, for example, coordinated Ralph Nader's Green Party campaign in Cambridge. Brice Smith serves as a "defender" at a local abortion clinic, escorting patients from their cars to the clinic door. Many write opinion columns for the Tech, the MIT student newspaper.
