In March of 2002, I spent a week photographing a workshop for the
mentally disabled. I hope that these photographs present a clear
picture of the mentally disabled adults in this workshop. I want these
photos to show their capabilities in a workplace and the caring
relationships they have with each other and the staff of the center.
I took on this project partly because my wife is a staff member at this
center, and partly because my brother is mentally disabled. I've never
been comfortable talking about his disability, partly because I never
wanted to face the fact that he's "different". Being at the workshop
and photographing mentally handicapped adults was a small step for me
towards accepting his handicap, and being more at ease with him.
While getting to know and photograph the people at the center, I found
myself momentarily at peace. The glassy gaze of the camera gave me a
chance to see the mentally disabled without the clouding burden of
my emotional baggage. I saw the warmth and caring that existed between the
staff and the individuals at the center. I was moved, and hopeful that
I too can form strong positive bonds with my brother. I'm grateful
to the people and staff of the Walnut Street Center for this clarity of
vision. I hope that you will be able to see something wonderful here
too.
