Prologue:
Newark New Jersey, 6:00 PMIt is a cold evening, perhaps a bare few degrees above zero. The engineer rubs his gloved hands in a futile effort to raise temperature of his hands a few degrees. It is dusk but fog still hangs low over Newark. He had to walk a fair distance from the station in order to get this view of the bridge, but it is a good thing he did. There are clear cracks visible in one of the structural members, just like the phone call said. He thinks momentarily about the Night Owl, which will be through in six hours, and all of the people on it. He moves to turn back, but is momentarily transfixed by the view. Not by its beauty, for sure, but there is something hypnotic about they way the setting sun makes the smog glow red-gold above the river. He calls back into the station and tells them what he has seen. |
