Assignment 1

From Janet:

choose two examples of good or bad design from this list of stories and send me an email by noon on Tuesday Feb 9 with the url of specific web pages illustrating your points and a sentence or two for each one, describing what you are commending or criticizing. If you are criticizing something, suggest the way to redesign it so it would be better.

Extra credit : make a sketch or web page illustrating the re-design.

  • The Great Cheese Hunt

Totally, I like this simple and friendly story and I think it is very familiar with kids.
There are a couple of points to cliticize design.

    Navigation

It is a little difficult to recognize where I am in the subway map. One of the solution is providing another window to show whole map always.

Goal should be emphasised more using different colors from other pages.

    Interaction

Because a mouse navigates from one station to another instead of Web users (kids), the mouse should be more attractive. For instance, mouse might appear in the station guide photos. Also the mouse can interact with some objects like croissant in Au Bon Pain or chinese food in Chinatown.

  • A Tale of Two Frums

This story is also simple and I like it. Compared with "The Great Cheese Hunt", this story's camera control depends on user's view point. We don't have any substitutional charactor of us.
Each door icon is a little confusing me because its open/close representation is not concerned with next situation. If I distinguish each door, I use door's color, shape or size.
