Problem 1: Structure and Scale

Choose ONE of the following:

An image of an empty lot in Hong Kong is shown in the image above. Describe at least three load-bearing structures that you observe. A basketball backboard stand is shown in the image to the right. Describe the relationship between it's form and it's function. Consider both the scale of the system and the scale of the elements. An image of green bamboo which has been split is shown to the right. Describe the functions of the plant's internal structures that you observe. Postulate as to their evolutionary advantage.

Problem 2
Describe a structural failure that you have personally experienced or observed. What were the mechanisms of the failure? Were any lessons learned from it?.

Problem 3
Describe the most dramatic structural failure that you are aware of. Why did it occur? What were the mitigating circumstancs? What changes occurred due to the lessons learned from the failure?.
