• Animated TLC demonstration. This shows how to prepare and execute a TLC separation. Although this animation shows the final solvent front being marked after the TLC is run, it is recommended that the experimentor mark this line before the experiment starts. Then, remove the plate as soon as the solvent front reaches the line. This is useful because the solvent will often evaporate before the final solvent front can be marked. A step-by-step walkthrough is provided, but all the necessary information is given in the previous link.

Essential Oils

• IR Tutor (Edison Project) The software demonstrates the normal vibrational modes of molecular vibration, such as stretching, bending, and rocking. You can easily learn to correlate characteristic spectral features with molecular structure. Animated graphics clarify even vibrations that are difficult to comprehend, such as the out-of-plane ring bend. IR Tutor is available for use on either a Macintosh or PC. You can download a Demo version from this site which is very useful.

Potentiometric Titration

• Interactive Potentiometric Titration Simulation 1: 3 different Ka values with the same concentration of the weak acid.
• Interactive Potentiometric Titration Simulation 2: You can select a Ka for the weak acid of between 1.0x10-6 and 1.0x10-4, and it will record the solution pH versus the total volume of the base solution you have added.
• Interactive Potentiometric Titration Simulation 3: In addition to the features in the Simulation 2, the concentration of the weak acid in this simulation is randomly generated every time the applet starts. See if you can determine the concentration of the weak acid.

Unknown Amino Acid

• Anatomy of an Amino Acid: This animated gif shows the constituent atoms of a generic amino acid and then cycles through all the common side groups.
