A note about Quiz 2

Thursday, November 17, 2011, in 4-270 & 4-370 (pick a room at random).

The syllabus for Quiz 2 is L10-L16, R11-16, PSet5-7 (see the course calendar as well as the Handouts link on the web site for the specific topics covered). Please note that lecture 9 on the Shannon capacity of the binary symmetric channel is not on this quiz.

You may bring two 2-sided crib sheets to the quiz. And a calculator. The crib sheets may be hand-written or printed.

Here's our plan to help you review the material taught since Quiz 1, and prepare for Quiz 2.

First, please check out and solve (or attempt to solve) the several practice problems and old quiz questions we have put together.

For the first quiz, the TAs ran an optional review session. The trouble with such a session is that not all students can make it, no matter when we schedule it, and it is hard for the TAs to identify what parts of the material are well-understood by the students and what aren't. Moreover, some students wrongly develop an exaggerated sense of importance about these review session problems, not realizing that usually the TAs running the session have no significant insight into what sorts of questions might appear on the quiz (i.e., they will not have seen the quiz before running the session).

To be more effective, we are going to do things differently for Quiz 2. The TAs will hold several hours of "tutorials" in the lab and will most likely be in touch with their students to schedule these hours. They will update the "lab hours" web page by Friday evening this week (11/11). These tutorial hours will be held between Sunday afternoon (11/13) and Wednesday night (11/16). Moreover, you should feel free to consult the lab hours web page and go talk to any TA (note: there is a difference between TAs and LAs; the Course info page has the names of the TAs). The goal of these tutorial hours is for the TAs to go through various problems (particularly the practice and old quiz problems) with small groups of students, so that the sessions can be more interactive and productive.

In addition, all the recitation instructors have office hours at the times mentioned on the web site, and also will hold office hours during their normal recitation times on Thursday, Nov 17 (the quiz date). You can also email them for an appointment. The course lecturers will be available to meet by appointment (please send email). Finally, we're always available on Piazza.

And please do solve the practice problems, contacting us if you have any problems.

Finally, if you're also taking 6.006, please take the 6.006 make-up quiz (per our quid pro quo with the 6.006 professors).

Thanks for reading this far!
